Hard water

How to tell if your water has limescale

And what it does to your water heater, appliances and pipes. Plain answers, no exaggeration.

The short answer

If you see white crust on your taps, on the shower glass or inside the kettle, your water is hard. Hard water carries a lot of calcium. When the water dries or heats up, that calcium is left behind as limescale. Water across most of Lebanon is hard, so most homes see it.

Signs you can check at home

  • White spots and crust on taps, sinks, tiles and shower glass after the water dries.
  • A chalky layer inside the kettle that comes back soon after you clean it.
  • Shower heads and taps that spray unevenly, because deposits block the small holes.
  • Soap and shampoo that lather less than you expect.
  • A water heater that takes longer to heat than it used to.

Any one of these is a strong hint. Several together point clearly to hard water. If you want a number, a water hardness test measures how much calcium is in the water.

What limescale does to the water heater

Limescale coats the heating element. The heater then takes longer and uses more electricity to heat the same water, and eventually fails early.

What it does to washing machines and dishwashers

The same thing happens inside them: limescale builds up on the internal heater and on the valves.

What it does to pipes

Inside pipes, limescale builds up layer by layer over time. As the layer gets thicker it narrows the pipe and can reduce the water flow. It also collects around valves and fittings. Hot water lines, and anything that heats water, get the worst of it, because heat makes calcium come out of the water.

Why cleaning alone does not fix it

Descaling products and vinegar remove the deposits that are already there, but the water keeps bringing in more calcium, so the deposits come straight back.

Your options, honestly

There are three kinds of product, and each one solves a different problem:

  • A filter removes something from the water. It is what you need if you want contaminants removed.
  • A salt water softener lowers the measured hardness. It needs salt topped up regularly, uses power, wastes water on regeneration, and needs plumbing work and a drain connection.
  • A magnetic descaler, like the one we sell, removes nothing. It clamps onto your main line and stops limescale sticking to pipes, the water heater and appliances. Calcium and magnesium stay in the water, so a hardness test reads the same after installation. It needs no salt, no electricity and no servicing.

If you specifically need the hardness number lowered, or contaminants removed, a softener or a filter is the right buy, and we will tell you so. The full comparison is on the product page, and more answers are in our hard water questions.
